This teardrop-shaped island offers travellers troves of culture and natural beauty bundled up in one small package. With a blend of colonial influence from the Dutch, Portuguese and British and rich ancient history, this vibrant and complex country shines as a must-visit destination. Its manageable size means travellers are able to experience a lot even during a shorter getaway.

In the centre of the island sits Kandy, the celebrated city that houses sacred Buddhist sites and vibrant festivals to worship them. From here one of the world’s most stunning train journeys chugs through the countryside to Ella, whisking travellers into lush valleys and the tea plantations for which the country is famous. For nature lovers, a trip to Sri Lanka wouldn’t be complete without witnessing some of its unique biodiversity. Spot leopards, sloth bears and monkeys on safari and learn all about elephants on a trip to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.

Best of all, more than 1300 kilometres of gorgeous beaches fringe the coast – many of them accessible from the capital, Colombo – and with balmy weather year-round you’re sure to find your own little slice of paradise no matter when you visit. While it’s still on the cusp of the travel radar, Sri Lanka is rapidly gaining attention from travellers looking for a destination that blends cultural exploration with relaxation. But until the masses arrive you’ll have much of this treasure for yourself.
